Mercedes has today announced that Valtteri Bottas will remain at the team for 2020 despite speculation that Esteban Ocon would take the seat.
After a disappointing 2018 in which Bottas failed to win a race, he kicked off 2019 with a bang by dominating the opening round in Australia and since went on to take a further race win and 4 pole positions. However his recent performances started to drop off and he went from championship leader to being 62 points behind Hamilton.
This lead many to speculate that Former Force India driver and Mercedes protégé Esteban Ocon would replace Bottas after taking a year out from racing.
However Mercedes still feel confident enough in Bottas wile Ocon has been rumored to be return to his old reserve team Renault.
“For 2019, we set Valtteri the challenge of coming back even stronger than we saw him in the first part of 2018,” said Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. “And he has achieved that, with some really impressive performances in the early races this year.
“Although it has been his most successful first half of a championship so far, he is hungry for more and determined to keep on improving and raising his level. That’s the mindset we want from all our team members.“
