Lewis Hamilton has extended his contract at Mercedes taking him till the end of 2020.
There had been much speculation as to whether the Brit would switch camps when his current contract expired this year.
But he has committed to another 2 years at the German squad which has powered him to 3 of his 4 world titles.
“I have been part of the Mercedes racing family for 20 years and I have never been happier inside a team than I am right now.” Said Hamilton. “I’m very confident that Mercedes is the right place to be over the coming years.”
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said that the contract had been in discussion since the end of 2017 but that the final details were only set this week.
“We have been aligned with Lewis ever since we first sat down to discuss the details of this contract after last season,” he said.
“We signed the final documents this week and didn’t want to keep people waiting any longer! There is not much about Lewis as a Formula One driver that hasn’t been said already – he is one of the all-time greats and his track record speaks for itself.”
The fact the contract runs till 2021 puts Hamilton in the market for the 2021 regulation shake-up should he decide to continue.
Hamilton also confirmed suspicions he had been approached by rival teams but didn’t say who it was.
“In terms of the other guys approaching, one did,” he said. “But I didn’t give it any air”
Mercedes still has yet to confirm who will partner Hamilton as Bottas’s contract also expires this year, however, the Finn looks set to keep his seat.
