Vettel fastest on final day of Hungary test

Sebastian Vettel went fastest on the final day testing in Hungary as the returning Robert Kubica went forth.

It was the first time Kubica had driven a current F1 car since his rally crash halted his F1 career back in 2011.

He finished the morning session in 7th before improving to 4th by the end of the day, with 142 laps and a fastest time of 1:18.572.

Initially, the Pole only did a handful of installation laps before getting down to some longer runs.

“It was a fantastic feeling for me to be here today in the RS17 and also it was amazing to see so many fans come to see me out on track, so thank you to all of them,” he said.

“It has been an incredible journey to this point, where I have answered many questions to myself. The car is certainly wider than before. I was able to work through the team’s programme methodically and I think we made good progress.

“After today, it’s too early to say what the next step might be. For now, I owe a big thanks to everyone at Renault for making this test happen.”

Elsewhere Vettel topped the time sheets in the morning session handing over to Raikkonen with a 1:17.124.

His closest challenger was the Mclaren of Lando Norris who was just 2 tenths off the championship leader.

Raikkonen was next with Kubica and the Toro Rosso’s of Sainz and Kvyat following behind, the latter a quarter of a second slower than the former.

Lucas Auer drove the Force India in the morning before handing over to Formula 3 driver Nikita Mazepin in the afternoon. They were 7th and 9th respectively.

George Russel was back in the Mercedes and completed a few laps with the Halo device fitted, the first time we have seen it since 2016, he was 8th ahead of the Red Bull young driver Pierre Gasly in 10th.

Luca Ghiotto managed the most laps of anyone with 161 to land the 11th fastest time.

Santino Ferrucci of Haas and Honda junior Nobuharu Matsushita were 12th and 13th to round out the time sheets.
